The will he, won’t he questions surrounding Tiger Woods’ Masters participation could well be viewed as ideal for those aiming to put on the green jacket this weekend.

There will be questions for Rory McIlroy, as he once more looks to complete the majors set, for Scottie Scheffler, as he enters his first major as the world No 1, and for Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson too, the trio deemed among the favourites at Augusta.

However, with the limelight firmly on Woods as he makes his comeback, those questions may be fewer, the media duties shorter, and the answers less headline-worthy, meaning the contenders can place a greater focus on the task at hand.

McIlroy at the Masters is a many-sided puzzle even he cannot work out. This is his 14th appearance at Augusta and his eighth crack at completing golf’s grand slam of all four majors since 2015.

After his Homeric collapse of 2011, when he blew a four-shot overnight lead on the final day, McIlroy’s consolation was his youth. At 32 he is still trying to get himself back into position at this tournament.

The difference now, he claims, is one of perspective. Life looks and feels radically different as a husband and a father, changes he hopes might hold the key to joining fab five Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Woods in the grand slam club.
